Jens Risom for Knoll Cotton Strap Lounge Chair

SOLD

mid century modern style woven cotton lounge chair designed by Jens Risom for Knollstudios

<SOLD> With amazing lines and woven cotton straps that give with your body, this classic pair of lounge chairs designed by Jens Risom has stood the test of time.  Born in Denmark, the idea for this chair came to this transplanted American designer during WWII when there was a surplus of discarded parachute webbing. In 1941, Risom teamed with entrepreneur Hans Knoll and in 1942, they launched the Hans Knoll Furniture Company.  Jens Risom’s designs were the first pieces conceived for and manufactured by Knoll. This collection helped establish Knoll as an early source of modern design in America.  These sleek chairs are still manufactured today, and though this set is contemporary, they hold the same punch as they did during the mid century epoch. Jens Risom recently passed away on December 9th of this year (2016) at 100 years old at his home in Connecticut, but his contribution to furniture design lives on.   $450 each

vintage-bertoia-diamond-chair-knoll

This iconic diamond chair by Harry Bertoia for Knoll furniture is clad in a regal purple wool seat covering and boasts an unparalleled profile.  Bertoia was an Italian-born American artist, sculptor, jewelry maker and modern furniture designer who designed five wire pieces that became known as the Bertoia Collection for Knoll.  Among these was the famous diamond chair –  a fluid, sculptural form made from a welded lattice work of steel.  In Bertoia’s own words, “If you look at these chairs, they are mainly made of air, like sculpture. Space passes right through them.”  This imaginative design was ground breaking, and still commands attention today.  This fantastic piece of furniture as art measures 44″W X 34″H with a seat height of 16 inches.

MCM Faux Bois Lounge Chair from the Viko Line by Baumritter

SOLD

viko baumritter lounge chair mid century modern vintage furniture

This mid century modern Faux Bois lounge chair from the Viko line by Baumritter has a tubular metal frame, solid walnut armrests, and a reversible original cushion.  One side of the cushion is solid teal vinyl, and the other is a complimentary striped pattern of navy blue, teal, and black.  Baumritter was the forerunner of what we now know as Ethan Allen, one of the world’s largest furniture manufacturer.  This is a well made, sturdy design that shows no sign of slowing down.  The back of the chair is spindled tubular metal that matches the tone of the “faux bois” (false wood in French) frame. This innovative design in the mid sixties using new factory made materials allowed the middle class to enjoy the beauty of rich wood without the exorbitant price tag.  This funky chair has a seat height of 16 inches.
