❖SOLD❖ Newly refinished blonde maple drop leaf table with splayed spindle legs. Designed by Paul McCobb, Planner Group manufactured for Winchendon. Has nicely chamfered edges & steel piano hinges for the drop leaves. Simple and practical yet elegant with a fantastic profile. Legs have some dings & discolorations to the wood which is typical of a vintage piece & does not reduce the aesthetic beauty of this piece. Measures 22″W leaves down, 56″W leaves extended, 36″ Deep & 28.5″H.
McCobb was one of the primary figures early in the Mid-Century Modern furniture movement. He strove to make durable, stylish furniture affordable for ordinary people, and succeeded. This table, like most of his work, is solid maple, no veneer. The round, tapered, outward facing legs which we now associate with the entire MCM era are McCobb’s original idea which everyone else later copied. The simple balance and visual presence of pieces like this one earned McCobb a show at New York’s Museum of Modern Art, and a page in the history of 20th century pop culture.
