This ‘model 1711’ vintage 1950’s sofa is constructed of bleached mahogany and provides seating for five. This extremely rare collector’s set from the mid twentieth century was designed by T.H. Robsjohn-Gibbings who worked as a designer for the Widdicomb Furniture Company of Grand Rapids, Michigan from 1943 to 1956. The ottoman has original cotton webbing and fabric while the sofa has new black leather straps and has been reupholstered in a complimentary fabric. The fabric is in very good condition with an area on the backrest that is wearing thin (documented in photos). The foam in the ottoman will need to be replaced. Original leather Widdicomb label is present on the ottoman.
Known for his preference for Classical Greek furniture design, he was the most important decorator in America in the late 1930’s and 1940’s. His interior design concepts were touted as shaping the modern American home. More information available in the Widdicomb, manufacturer’s catalog, pg. 28.
