Description

This vintage, mid century modern pendant lamp in the style of Gerald Thurston features a dome shaped metal shade accented by a white, perforated, metal screen and a wooden handle. In keeping with the era, the shade has an atomic style that resembles a flying saucer. This design reflects the fascination with the ‘space race’ between the United States and the Soviet Union in the mid twentieth century. This atomic overhead light is suspended by a thick rope threaded through an articulating brass elbow and can be raised or lowered by the strong pulley cord.  This lamp has been rewired and is in very good vintage condition. There are a few scratches and areas of discoloration typical for age and use as documented in attached photos. Operated by plugging into any standard outlet and turning a thumb switch located in the center.

Atomic style refers to an era in design that took place roughly between 1940 and 1963, wherein fear of nuclear war dominated western societies. During the Cold War era, atomic science and space age themes influenced most areas of interior design.
